Your staff are embracing BYOA, but are you?

Australian enterprises are struggling to keep up with the new ‘bring your own app’ (BYOA) trend taking over workplace cultures, with two-thirds already reporting their staff use personal applications for work.

The research by tech analyst firm Telsyte, surveyed more than 460 ICT decision makers on their organisations’ approach to ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) and ‘bring your own app’ (BYOA) trends.

Their key findings include:

  • 27 percent of organisations allow staff to use any personal mobile or cloud app for work purposes without any restrictions.
  • 30 per cent of staff who are allowed to use personal apps, do so for work purposes.
  • 34 per cent of businesses do not allow BYOA at all and enforce it with tactical approaches like management tools or other means.
  • 80 per cent of Australia’s IT departments still have no plans to officially support BYOA.

The research also showed that while businesses should take advantage of the emerging BYOA trends and allow staff to use public software, they will have to ensure that the software has the security and integration requirements of corporate IT. Privacy and security. These were the number one challenges cited in the survey arising from staff adopting “Bring You Own” IT.

Telsyte’s study also cited these as the most popular BYOA apps:

  • data backups and storage (Dropbox, iCloud)
  • calendaring and collaboration (GoToMeeting, WebEx)
  • voice communications (Skype)
  • project and task management (Remember the Milk)
  • productivity (Pages, QuickOffice Pro)
  • multimedia; and note taking (Evernote)
